I ain’t no regular dog, more like a wolf on the kill Howlin’ at and hidin’ in shadows from The clouds hanging over me A prisoner of my mental cages My own worst enemy A product of the gamblin’ with the cards that’s dealt A survivor of my dreams Nothin’ worth doing don’t come without a price You better saddle up, better hold on tight It’s gonna be a long ride Get a good look, make a few good moves Let it go to your head and you’re a goddamn fool You better not think twice Daddy loved his work, I guess I do too Same old show, a different place, another pеrson Just grinnin’ in your face Look what got me herе, look at what i’ve become Another highway, another song, don’t it all sound sweet When we all sing along? Nothin’ worth doing don’t come without a price Better saddle up, better hold on tight It’s gonna be a long ride Get a good look, make a few good moves Let it go to your head and you’re a goddamn fool You better not think twice Nothin’ worth doing don’t come without a price Better saddle up, better hold on tight It’s gonna be a long ride Get a good look, make a few good moves Let it go to your head and you’re a goddamn fool You better not think twice I ain’t no regular dog, more like a wolf on the kill

Sweet little girl, straight off the farm Didn't mean nobody Didn't mean nobody any harm Sweet little girl with her mama's charm Took everything she had To not put daddy's money in her arm I said nobody's raisin' you now, she said nobody ever did So what's it matter anyhow? I'm gonna drink myself drunk I'm gonna get myself high Anythin' just to make the time pass by I been crawlin' up the walls Just a like a little ol' house fly Anythin' so I can't feel this hollow inside Foggy lights blur in my mind Down a smoky interstate Watch the big trucks fly Burn so bright with a neon glow Count every line And just let it all go Two more hours and we'll be home Bluegrass is callin' Buddy, and I must go I'm gonna drink myself drunk I'm gonna get myself high Anythin' just to make the time pass by I been crawlin' up the walls Just a like a little ol' house fly Anythin' so I can't feel this hollow inside Sweet little girl, straight off the farm Didn't mean nobody Didn't mean nobody any harm

"Season's Ending" Ever since you went away it feels like season’s ending And ain’t it just like you to bloom and be gone But spring can’t last all year and the flowers will soon be fading Lay your worries down for tomorrow may never come Take a walk outside, tell your mama and them you love ‘em Cause once upon a time, they were just like me and you Just a tiny little hand reaching for someone to love on We come in this world a cryin’ and we leave it all the samе Season’s Ending Winds are gonna change Sеason’s Ending Only time will heal the pain I’ve heard it said that God don’t make no mistakes But it’s hard to say that God don’t wear a crooked smile I suppose the one that gives is the one that takes away Seems like you can’t have Heaven on earth without hell to pay Season’s Ending Winds are gonna change Season’s Ending Only time will heal the pain "Sweet Little Girl" Sweet little girl, straight off the farm Didn't mean nobody Didn't mean nobody any harm Sweet little girl with her mama's charm Took everything she had To not put daddy's money in her arm I said nobody's raisin' you now, she said nobody ever did So what's it matter anyhow? Feelin’ so low, downright mean Trying to live up to some honky tonk dream Wondering if three chords and the truth Still mean the same to me Well I’m feelin’ kind of lucky and also damn strange Been all around the world for some small piece of change Singin’ my heart out at some shitty bar Hawkin’ on my old guitar Whoever thought that I would take it this far? Some days you’re gonna feel real fine On top of the world, on cloud nine Can’t nobody touch you when you’re after your piece of the pie On other days you won’t feel alright Other days you wanna break down and cry Blow up in smoke like some ol’ pipelinе Like teargas in the sky You can’t stand tall and mighty all thе time Now everything’s not as bad as it seems Most of my friends are on methamphetamine Trying to raise babies in this cold world Wondering what could have been Yeah they’re puttin’ in the hours on a river barge Pushing some freight past a gravel bar Trying to make the best of what’s been handed to them Still wondering what could have been Yeah, they’re trying to start all over again Some days you’re gonna feel real fine On top of the world, on cloud nine Can’t nobody touch you when you’re after your piece of the pie Other days you won’t feel alright Other days you wanna break down and cry Blow up in smoke like some ol’ pipeline Like teargas in the sky You can’t stand tall and mighty all the time

Took a little run on a red trail getaway Let it take me where it wants to let me go Black snake crawlin through the soy beans, summertime It's hotter than a child should ever know Like a cypress changin' colors, one after another Like the green turns into the bronze Only here for a moment then we're gone White noise and white lines, County Road 1029 Let your mind free, and dream on Only here for a moment then we're gone The sun and the moon, they've been out dancin' Makes me feel like I wanna carry on Chickasaw man got a buffalo-skin drum Singin' songs about being far from home Listen to the drums play, listen to what that man say Feels like a long journey you're takin' on, But you're only here for a moment then you're gone White noise and white lines, County Road 1029 Let your mind free, and dream on Only here for a moment then we're gone Only here for a moment then were gone Only here for a moment then we're gone

You can’t ever tell That’s what the old man would say It don’t matter who you are, you know You might be a big star But you still might go crazy someday You might wanna cut loose You might kick off your ol’ boots You might let down your hair But now they’re coming in pairs And they just might put you in a suit You just can’t ever tell Maybe I’ll feel better tomorrow Maybe I’ll have no regrets But I just, I just don’t know yet You just can’t ever tell Ain’t no one that’s perfect, but I know when it’s worth it (Oh well) You just can’t ever tell Say I will, but I won’t Say you love me, but you don’t Say you’re being sincere but maybe this timе next year It’ll be diffеrent, (it’s) different I know You just can’t ever tell

I went to school on the rural route With my brother the same age as me Couldn’t tell us apart to save yourself Except the devil in my eyes and who I came to be Could have been someone like my brother did Like the promise of a new morning sun But tell me what else is a poor boy to do Except to sell so he can live and die by the gun Worn out like an old pair of denim, I’m faded Politicians pushin’ pills wanna keep me sedatеd Keep the poor in prison and interrogated Don’t history rеpeat itself? Find your faith in somewhere’s else Gotta get out before I kill myself Now I’m wanted in two or three counties For everything that I have done The law finally found me to take me away There was nothing left to do but run Worn out like an old pair of denim, I’m faded Politicians pushin’ pills wanna keep me sedated Keep the poor in prison and interrogated Don’t history repeat itself? Find your faith in somewhere’s else Gotta get out before I kill myself Gotta get out before I kill mysel

Be kind to me Ain't got nobody, ain't got no one to look after me I didn't choose this life but it chose me The more the tide rolls in, time rolls away from me On a river bank Ain't never taken anything that don't belong to me But when she decides to return, she'll take everything she sees A copperhead might strike you dead Before you've seen anything Oh, mama, seems like the water's been 10 feet high And I just don't understand why it makes me cry If I can keep it together until the spring When that damn river runs dry I'll count my blessings, just like the stars That are in the sky When it all comes down I'll be here to clean up and claim my ground You wouldn't know mother nature's power If she never made a sound I can't be too proud, she's got me cryin' out loud Oh, mama, seems like the water's been 10 feet high And I just don't understand why it makes me cry If I can keep it together until the spring When that damn river runs dry I'll count my blessings, just like the stars That are in the sky I'll count my blessings, just like the stars That are in the sky

Rivers run wild like a spider vein Old as time steady as a train Just like the only thing that’ll ease the pain Is the look at the sight of you Like a monarch to a mimosa tree Your love abides so naturally Bringing out the best in me Like it’s lived here all along Simple as a cotton dress Patient as the moon never in contest Just like a heart beats in a chest It knows what it needs to survive Love, Love, Love Simple as love Love, Love, Love simple as your love Like a junkie’s got it’s itch It leaves you wantin’ more, wantin all of it Just like a lily in a ditch It grows where it wants to grow Simple as a cotton dress Patient as the moon never in contest Just like a heart beats in a chest It knows what it needs to survive Love, Love, Love Simple as love Love, Love, Love simple as love Love, Love, Love, Simple as Love Love, Love, Love, Simple as Your Love

Where do you run when the darkness calls you? Who do you talk to when you’re alone? Wild as a buck, stubborn to the bone Drunk and stoned and you wanna go home There ain’t no money in this world that could fix you Not if you don’t have peace, I know You can toil all day, worry your life away But that’s a hard row to hoe, reap what you sow Strong and tall as the old oak tree Got an old soul with roots so deep The road to hell is paved with good intentions At least as far as we can see There ain’t no money in this world that could fix you Not if you don’t have peace, I know You can toil all day, worry your life away But that’s a hard row to hoe, reap what you sow If you chase the almighty dollar Sorrow’s always bound to follow Don’t take no wooden nickels in this rich man’s game That kind of fame is bound to drive you insane There ain’t no money in this world that could fix you Not if you don’t have peace, I know You can toil all day, worry your life away But that’s a hard row to hoe, reap what you sow All that matters is peace, I know All that matters is peace, alone All that matters is peace, I know All that matters is peace, alone

I take it with a grain of salt I can’t think it’s all my fault The world’s spinnin’ round while my eyes trace the ground Never knowing the time that I’ve lost If I crawl all the way back in my mind A dark cloud I’m surely to find But storms never scared me and if you’re the bettin’ kind You could bet on a heart like mine There’s time’s I’ve been rough, been a little too rowdy Been a little too selfish cause I needed a friend Whether I’m up or I’m down or this dream’s getting cloudy I’ll write it all down as progress again Therе is hope in persistencе Just like a hymn that you hear in the distance And if there’s truth to be told, don’t you let it grow cold And be careful with that weight that you hold There’s time’s I’ve been rough, been a little too rowdy Been a little too selfish cause I needed a friend Whether I’m up or I’m down or this dream’s getting cloudy I’ll write it all down as progress again Progress Again Progress Again Progress Again

Entitlement only leads to disappointment, Because you can't ever hang on too long to anything They gave that man a microphone, and a song to sing Now he's sayin' big words and he don't know what they mean Because you can't place a crown on the head of a clown And then hope he turns out to be a king. Competition only comes with a fine line, And jealousy only seems to bring me down Well I was never trying to be the queen, I just take a lot of pride in who I am, and the way I sing I just know you can't place a crown on the head of a clown And then hope it turns out to be a king. I believe in doin' it right Takin' your time, And staying true to who you are. Fight the good fight Keep those harmonies tight, And maybe tuning your guitar. I've got to get it off my chest, I'm trying my best, I know some of y'all know what I mean When I say, you can't place a crown on the head of a clown And then hope he turns out to be a king. I've got to get it off my chest, I'm trying my best, I know some of yall know what I mean When I say, you can't place a crown on the head of a clown And then hope he turns out to be a king. She was a level-headed dancer On the road to alcohol And I was just a soldier on my way to Montreal Well, she pressed her chest against me About the time the juke box broke Yeah, she give me a peck On the back of the neck And these are the words she spoke "Blow up your TV Throw away your paper Go to the country Build you a home Plant a little garden Eat a lot of peaches Try an' find Jesus on your own" Well, I sat there at the table And I acted real naive For I knew that topless lady Had something up her sleeve Well, she danced around the bar room And she did the hoochie-coo Yeah, she sang her song all night long Tellin' me what to do "Blow up your TV Throw away your paper Go to the country Build you a home Plant a little garden Eat a lot of peaches Try an' find Jesus on your own" Well, I was young and hungry And about to leave that place When just as I was leavin' Well, she looked me in the face I said, "You must know the answer" She said, "No, but I'll give it a try" And to this very day, we've been livin' our way Here is the reason why We blew up our TV Threw away our paper Went to the country Built us a home Had a lot of children Fed 'em on peaches They all found Jesus on their own

about

I wanted this Deluxe album to truly encapsulate the journey of these songs. From the most vulnerable iPhone voice memos, to the studio and then to the stage after months on the road. It was really rewarding and humbling for me to reflect on this process of growth as both a songwriter and a performer. My band on these live recordings (Her Hot Band) was a huge source of inspiration for me and we all fed off of each other which turned into something kind of electric. There are just some things that can’t be captured in the studio as well as on the stage, live and in the moment. New and old songs took a new life. Everybody in this band plays like they've got something to prove, and I love that. Each person is a heavy weight in their own corner. It is something very special that I am thankful has been documented on the Deluxe album. No Regular Dog (Deluxe) is about not being afraid to put yourself out there and pulling up the curtain a little bit to see what’s behind it all.

There are two live bonus tracks from older albums, “False King” and “White Noise, White Lines”, as well as an unreleased version of “Spanish Pipedream” by my hero, friend and mentor the Late John Prine. It was supposed to go on a tribute album that never came to be. I am so happy it’s being released now and it remains as relevant as ever. It’s the perfect vibe for the long-awaited arrival of Spring.
